What Is Concrete Cancer?

What Is Concrete Cancer and Why Does It Happen?

Concrete cancer occurs when the reinforcement steel inside concrete begins to corrode. As it rusts, the steel expands — cracking, and eventually breaking away, the concrete around it. Left untreated, it keeps spreading and can affect structural performance.

Rust staining

Orange or brown streaks bleeding through the surface, tracing where reinforcement sits underneath.

Cracking in straight lines

Cracks that run in a fairly straight pattern usually follow the reinforcement bars beneath the surface.

Spalling or crumbling

Concrete flaking, chipping or breaking away at edges, corners, balconies and soffits.

Hollow or bulging sections

A section that sounds hollow when tapped, or looks like it's lifting, often means it's delaminating underneath.

Our Concrete Cancer Repair Process

Our Concrete Cancer Repair Process

Concrete cancer repair only lasts if every step is done properly and in sequence. This is how we approach it.

01

Assess

We assess the extent of corrosion and spalling, including areas that look sound but are already delaminating underneath.

02

Remove & prepare

Affected concrete is removed and the exposed reinforcement is prepared back to sound material.

03

Treat the corrosion

Reinforcement is treated for corrosion, with steel replaced where section loss requires it.

04

Rebuild

Repair mortar is installed to reinstate the original profile and structural section.

05

Protect

A protective coating system is applied to guard against the corrosion starting again.
